A guy falls in love with a girl.
He wants to be able to provide for her, so he decides to put off being with her so he can pursue his career.
He misses his moment, and she marries another man.
He is so distraught that he goes to a magician called Gurdjieff and says:
“Can you please send me back to age eleven so I can do this all over again? I will not make the same mistakes again.”
Gurdjieff says “Actually, you will. You will do everything the exact same again, because you can’t help yourself. You may deviate slightly, but you will end up in the same place without her.”
The guy is insistent, so Gurdjieff send him back to age eleven.
Sure enough, he makes every mistake, exactly the same.
He finally gets back to the magician who says “You’re lucky that you made it here, because you could have made a wrong decision and I would have disappeared too.”
Gurdjieff then says “What if I told you that the wedding was fake, and she pretended to get married so you would be upset?”
The guy says “I want to run off and be with her now.”
Gurdjieff responds, “That will end badly, because you haven’t done the work. You have realized that you need to change, but you haven’t done anything to change. Come spend a few years with me and then maybe you might have a chance of being with her, but otherwise all paths lead to you not being with this woman.”
